About John "Jellybean" Benitez

With a career spanning seminal New York nightclubs and the Hollywood soundstage, John "Jellybean" Benitez is a master-mix DJ and producer who currently leads commercial-free Studio 54 Radio and creates playlists that pay homage to the legendary club of the late 1970s. As executive producer, Jellybean Benitez hosts a number of programs and spins disco and club classics, including original mixes from his personal collection.

Mr. Benitez gained initial exposure within the burgeoning disco scene at Xenon and soon moved into regular DJ spots at all of New York’s hottest clubs, including Electric Circus. Throughout the early 1980s, he was Fun House’s resident DJ and his signature phrase "Jellybean Rocks the House” came to the fore.

At the same time, Mr. Benitez achieved renown for diverse remixes that included "Flashdance" by Irene Cara and "Say, Say, Say” by Paul McCartney and Michael Jackson. He also produced a number of indelible hits including Madonna’s breakthrough “Holiday,” and remixed the pop diva’s early hits “Borderline" and "Lucky Star.”

Over the course of his career, John Benitez has achieved a number of accolades, including Best Producer at the 1987 International DMC DJ Awards. The Grand Marshall of the 2010 NYC Dance Parade, he also received the Outstanding Service and Dedication Award in 2013 from the Christian Rivera Foundation.
